South Australian celebrates a remarkable milestone as the 2024 Premier’s Award for Lifetime Achievement is presented to James Currie—a multi-award-winning sound designer, recordist, and mixer whose career spans nearly five decades.

A regional South Australia native, James initially pursued a career in composition at the Adelaide Conservatorium. His path shifted to film after renowned writer Colin Thiele encouraged him to study at Flinders University, where he graduated with first-class honours in 1975. This marked the beginning of an extraordinary journey in sound design.

James has played a pivotal role in shaping the South Australian screen industry since the 1970s. With over 146 productions to his name, his innovative work has earned him an international reputation. He has collaborated with celebrated directors such as Paul Cox, Rolf de Heer, Molly Reynolds, Darleen Johnson, and Scott Hicks.

Throughout his illustrious career, James has received and been nominated for 26 prestigious film awards, including international accolades. His contributions have also been recognised with a Flinders University Distinguished Alumni Award, an Honorary Doctorate for Australian Film Sound, and the title of Adjunct Professor from Griffith University.

Congratulations to James Currie on this well-deserved recognition of his lifetime of achievements!
