It’s not just about the pictures: Cinematographer Andy Taylor ACS Shares his Sound journey with Special Guest Ray Martin

On October 8th 2024, the Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS), in partnership with ASSG sponsor, Sennheiser Pro Audio, hosted an in-conversation event with award-winning cinematographer Andy Taylor ACS and TV legend Ray Martin. Taylor shared how he has successfully integrated Sennheiser audio equipment into his camera kit and the value it brings to his work. The event was organised by ASSG committee member Dr Gerald Mair and drew 40 attendees, including AFTRS students, staff, alumni, and members of the ACS and ASSG guilds.

The evening kicked off with casual networking over drinks before Andy Taylor took to the stage for the main session. Taylor shared practical insights from his three-decade career, particularly his approach to shooting interviews. He discussed the importance of lens choice, framing, lighting and on-screen content, explaining how these factors influence both the sound and vision of an interview.
The audience was particularly interested in Taylor’s expertise in sound recording. He emphasised the importance of mic placement, acoustics, and recording levels, highlighting the challenges of capturing high-fidelity sound in often unpredictable environments. Taylor also demonstrated the latest Sennheiser EW-DP wireless system, showcasing its reliability and ease of use. Interestingly he also talked of his on-going love for, and reliance on, the good old 416 mic.

Taylor was joined on stage by the inimitable Ray Martin, who engaged in a lively and insightful discussion about their long relationship in the Field. The close bond between the two was immediately obvious as they shared compelling stories about the challenges they’ve faced together in their careers.  The dynamic between them on stage was more reminiscent of a seasoned double act than a cameraman and TV presenter and brought a mix of humour and honesty to the conversation. Thoughtful questions from the audience gave the duo an opportunity to share fascinating insights into their work and life together. The evening wrapped with the buzz of attendees leaving the theatre, appreciative of having gained both practical knowledge and more understanding about sound.
