Screen Careers: Sound Assistant course

October 6 - October 10

Sound Assistant course for Female & Non-Binary Crew
Presented by: Screenwest and Screen Careers

What’s the workshop about?

Sound is one of the most critical yet under-recognised parts of screen production — and sound assistants are in high demand. This intensive 5-day practical training program is designed exclusively for women and non-binary crew looking to upskill or re-train as sound assistants. Presented by Screenwest and Screen Careers.

This program addresses a national skills gap while driving greater gender equity in sound departments, a field traditionally dominated by men. By building the capacity of underrepresented crew, we are helping to create a stronger, more inclusive WA screen industry.

Led by Sue Kerr, one of Australia’s most experienced boom operators and endorsed by the Australian Screen Sound Guild, the course combines hands-on training, industry insights, and practical set skills. Participants will gain the confidence and technical knowledge to step onto professional productions.

Following the course, Screen Careers provides 3 months of follow-up support, including CV and cover letter guidance, job-hunting sessions, and targeted industry introductions. Graduates will also get 12 months membership of the Australian Screen Sound Guild and may be recommended for upcoming WA productions.

Sue Kerr: Sue is current Committee Member of the ASSG and a boom swinger with over 40 years experience across major films and television series such as Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (2024), The Fall Guy (2024), Prosper (2024), The Secrets She Keeps (2020–2022), Blaze (2022), Three Thousand Years of Longing (2022), Ruby’s Choice (2022), Total Control (2019), Frayed (2019), and Palm Beach (2019)
