Queensland’s Lyrebirds Sound Workshops
In late January, Lyrebirds Screen Sound Club, a joint venture between Sound Recordist Alicia Butterworth and Sound Editor Tfer Newsome, launched in Brisbane, delivering workshops designed to support female and gender-diverse screen sound specialists in the Brisbane area.
Lyrebirds was supported by an initial grant from Screenrights Cultural Fund, Griffith University and SAE Brisbane, Folklore and numerous sponsors, including Sennheiser, AKA Pro Audio, Radius, Tentacle, Ursa and many more!
The seven workings, each a day-long, covered drama, location sound for documentary and unscripted TV, future sound, soldering (!), post-sound, and the sound business. Guest lecturers included the amazing Cate Cahill, Maize Wallin, Dr Leah Barclay, industry legend Ian Grant and Monica Davidson from Creative+Business, Sennheiser, Kara Moolman and Joshua O’Donnell, Chapman Chan, and Kyra Bellamy.
The workshops were delivered to small groups to allow hands-on learning, engaging 40 participants, from recent graduates to industry professionals.
In conjunction with these workshops, a fabulous sound recording kit has been made available to emerging sound practitioners to use on low—to no-budget projects to access industry-standard equipment as they learn the craft and establish their networks.
The ASSG kindly sponsored the final day’s wrap party. A huge thank you to everyone who made these workshops possible and to those who attended!
